At Woodlyn Academy, our academic program is thoughtfully designed around clear learning pathways that support each child’s growth and development. Through a balanced focus on literacy, mathematics, science, physical development, and cultural understanding, we provide students with the tools they need to think critically, explore confidently, and build strong academic foundations.

Our Academics are rooted in purposeful instruction and Montessori principles. Each subject area supports independence, curiosity, and mastery through hands-on learning, guided exploration, and individualized instruction that meets children where they are.

Infant Program

Woodlyn Academy provides an academic, caring, and safe environment for infants ages 6 weeks through 16 months. Infants need to develop a bond with their caregiver through the establishment of a relationship built on trust, allowing brain development to occur within proper developmental timeframes. Our Infant teachers meet each child’s individual needs while assisting with the skills needed to develop cognitive, language, and social skills.

  • Our Infants are given time to develop the muscle strength needed for gross motor development through participation in tummy time activities.
  • Teachers remain in consistent communication with infants throughout their day and read stories to develop language skills.
  • Teachers are trained to teach and detect infant communication signals through the use of infant sign language.

The brain is rapidly developing in infancy, and the infant program you choose for your child is extremely important!

Toddler Program

Woodlyn Academy’s Toddler Program serves children 17-36 months. This is a stage filled with rapid growth, curiosity, and newfound independence. Our program is designed to encourage exploration and confidence while still surrounding each child with the warmth, reassurance, and affection their developing brains need to build healthy self-awareness and strong social connections.

In our Toddler classrooms, language development is a primary focus. Teachers engage children in continuous conversation throughout the day and introduce a rich love of books through frequent story time in both small and large group settings. These experiences strengthen early communication skills while nurturing a genuine love for reading.

As toddlers gain confidence in their growing bodies, they are supported in developing gross motor skills through active play and movement-based learning. At the same time, children build important cognitive foundations including color recognition, early letter and number awareness, and problem-solving skills.

Social development is carefully guided as toddlers learn manners, respect, cooperation, and positive peer interactions. Daily routines provide structure and security, while activities such as toilet training (when developmentally ready) are introduced with patience and encouragement.
Every day is intentionally planned to support learning through hands-on experiences in a joyful, engaging environment.
We invite you to visit our Toddler Program and see why Woodlyn Academy is such a special place for your child’s early learning journey.

The School Age Program at Woodlyn Academy provides students with a structured, enriching environment that supports academic growth, independence, and personal responsibility. Designed for children attending elementary school, our program extends learning beyond the classroom while offering consistency, guidance, and meaningful engagement before and after the school day.

Students receive academic support through homework assistance, small-group instruction, and individualized enrichment, helping them strengthen core skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and critical thinking. Our educators work closely with each child to reinforce classroom learning, build confidence, and encourage positive study habits.

In addition to academic support, the School Age Program offers a wide range of enrichment experiences including chess instruction, physical activity, creative arts, technology-based learning, and collaborative projects. These opportunities promote problem-solving, leadership, teamwork, and self-expression.

Social and emotional development remains a central focus as students strengthen communication skills, learn conflict resolution, and build healthy peer relationships. Through guided activities and daily routines, children develop independence, accountability, and respect for themselves and others.

Woodlyn Academy’s School Age Program creates a supportive bridge between school and home, ensuring students continue to grow academically, socially, and emotionally in a safe, motivating, and engaging environment.

Summer Camp Program

Woodlyn Academy’s Summer Camp Program is where learning, adventure, and unforgettable memories come together. Each summer, our campus transforms into an exciting world of exploration, discovery, and friendship, offering children a season filled with laughter, growth, and new experiences.

Woodlyn Academy’s Summer Camp is more than a program; it’s a summer they will always remember.

Reading

Reading is a powerful foundation for learning, and we introduce it early through meaningful, developmentally appropriate experiences that support each child’s natural curiosity and growth. In alignment with Montessori principles, our classrooms are thoughtfully prepared to encourage independence, exploration, and a deep respect for each child’s individual learning journey.

Reading begins with individualized story time in our Infant Program, grows into interactive and engaging literacy experiences in our Toddler Program, and continues with self-directed, theme-based reading in our Preschool Program, allowing children to connect stories to the world around them. Our Pre-Kindergarten and School Age programs offer a rigorous, research-informed literacy approach centered on phonemic awareness, reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary development.

Through personalized instruction, small-group learning, and continuous progress monitoring, we ensure that students build strong literacy skills and develop the confidence needed to read on or above grade level. By combining structured literacy with Montessori-inspired practices, Woodlyn Academy creates an environment where children not only learn to read, but truly love to read.

Writing

At Woodlyn Academy, we believe that the ability to use words and express one’s thoughts is invaluable. Learning to write gives children a powerful voice and allows them to communicate with the world in meaningful ways. Guided by Montessori principles, we recognize that writing begins long before a child holds a pencil.

In our Infant Program, we introduce activities that strengthen pincer grasp and develop essential fine motor skills. In our Toddler Program, children engage in hands-on experiences that support hand-eye coordination while using large writing tools, such as crayons and pencils, to build the hand strength and control needed for future writing.

In our Preschool Program, writing is naturally integrated throughout the classroom environment and across all learning areas. Children are encouraged to explore writing through purposeful activities that support creativity, confidence, and independence. Our Pre-Kindergarten Program emphasizes writing with intention. Students develop early composition skills while strengthening phonetic awareness and reading comprehension, laying the foundation for strong communication and academic success.

Through this thoughtful, developmentally aligned approach, Woodlyn Academy fosters capable writers who are confident in expressing their ideas and prepared for lifelong learning.

Mathematics

Mathematics is a foundational part of our curriculum and is an essential life skill. Research consistently shows that a child’s early math knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of future academic success. For this reason, we intentionally nurture mathematical thinking from the very beginning.

Rooted in Montessori philosophy, our approach recognizes that children learn math best through hands-on exploration and real-life experiences. Math is woven into each student’s daily routine, transforming ordinary moments into meaningful learning opportunities. Each of these “math moments” serves as a stepping stone, building confidence and preparing students for increasingly complex mathematical concepts.

Mathematical learning begins in our Infant Program through rich language experiences and sensory activities such as counting fingers, recognizing quantities, engaging in music and movement, and exploring cause-and-effect relationships. In our Toddler, Preschool, and Pre-Kindergarten Programs, children deepen their understanding of math through measuring, sorting, building, recognizing patterns, making comparisons, and describing their environment. They develop early number sense by counting, identifying shapes, and working with concrete materials that allow them to see, touch, and manipulate mathematical concepts.

Science

Science education begins in our Infant Program and evolves naturally as each child grows, guided by Montessori principles that honor curiosity, exploration, and independent discovery. Our approach recognizes that children are born scientists, driven by an innate desire to observe, question, and understand the world around them.

Within our prepared environments, students engage in purposeful scientific work through hands-on exploration, observation, and experimentation. Using classic Montessori materials and experiences such as Nature Study, Botany and Zoology Works, Sensorial Exploration, Practical Life Investigations, and Scientific Classification, children actively construct their understanding of physical, biological, and earth sciences. These carefully designed works strengthen communication, collaboration, perseverance, analytical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.

Our Science curriculum is rooted in real-world discovery. Students observe living and non-living elements of their environment, document their findings through journals and drawings, conduct simple experiments, and participate in group investigations that encourage discussion and reflection. Through these experiences, children come to understand that science exists both within themselves and throughout the world they inhabit.

By fostering independence, concentration, and a deep respect for nature and life, Woodlyn Academy’s Montessori-inspired science program cultivates confident learners who approach the world with curiosity, wonder, and a lifelong love of discovery.

Gross Motor Activity

Our daily Gross motor activities reflect our commitment to providing high-quality learning experiences in alignment with OCDEL and Keystone STARS Level 4 standards. Through structured and purposeful movement, we support each child’s physical development, health, and overall well-being while fostering confidence, perseverance, and positive social skills.

The program is designed to promote gross motor development, physical coordination, and healthy lifestyle habits through age appropriate activities, that challenge children to set personal goals, and experience success, in a supportive environment.

  • Infants participate in guided movement experiences such as tummy time, crawling, pulling to stand, cruising along sturdy surfaces, and using push toys to strengthen the muscles necessary for walking and overall motor development.
  • Toddlers develop balance, coordination, and body awareness through activities that encourage walking, running, skipping, hopping, jumping, and climbing.
  • Preschoolers physical education expands to include: cooperative games, organized group activities, and team-building exercises that strengthen endurance, confidence, self-esteem, and social interaction. Through active play, children learn cooperation, self-regulation, and respect for others while building lifelong habits for physical health and wellness.

By integrating movement into each child’s daily routine, Woodlyn Academy ensures that physical development is nurtured alongside cognitive, social, and emotional growth.

Geography

Our approach to teaching Geography helps children understand the world, their place within it, and the interconnectedness of all people and cultures. We support students in developing a global perspective rooted in respect, curiosity, and responsibility.

Within our prepared environments, children engage in meaningful geographic work through classic Montessori materials and experiences such as Land and Water Forms, Continent Studies, Map Work, Cultural Studies, Flag Studies, and Peace Education. Through hands-on exploration, children develop essential geographic skills including spatial awareness, observation, classification, comparison, and critical thinking.

Our Geography curriculum is woven throughout our social studies and Montessori programs using rich thematic units that connect children to real places, people, and traditions. Students explore continents, countries, climates, landforms, and cultural practices, gaining an understanding of how communities around the world are interdependent and connected.

Each year, this learning comes to life through our International Celebration, where we honor and celebrate the many cultures and ethnicities represented within our school community. Through these experiences, children develop not only academic knowledge, but also empathy, respect for diversity, and a deep appreciation for the world they are preparing to inherit.

Social & Emotional Development

At Woodlyn Academy, social and emotional learning is intentionally woven into every part of the school day. We believe that strong emotional foundations are essential for academic success, healthy relationships, and lifelong well-being.

Our classrooms implement the Red Door System and A Little SPOT of Emotions framework to help students identify, understand, and manage their feelings in developmentally appropriate ways. Through daily practice, children learn emotional vocabulary, self-awareness, empathy, problem-solving, and effective communication. These systems empower students to recognize their emotions, choose healthy coping strategies, and build resilience as they grow.

Supporting this work is our on-site Behavioral Specialist, who partners closely with students, teachers, and families to strengthen emotional regulation and social skills. The Behavioral Specialist provides individualized support, observes classroom interactions, develops behavior plans when needed, and serves as a consistent resource for both children and staff.

In addition, our Behavioral Specialist acts as a dedicated liaison between school, families, medical providers, and community agencies, helping families navigate evaluations, access services, coordinate care, and pursue appropriate diagnoses when necessary. This collaborative approach ensures that every child receives the support they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Through intentional instruction, responsive guidance, and strong family partnerships, Woodlyn Academy creates a nurturing environment where children feel safe, supported, and confident in who they are becoming.

Educational Excursions & Enrichment

Our philosophy is that learning extends far beyond the classroom. We believe that meaningful experiences deepen understanding, spark curiosity, and bring academic concepts to life. Through carefully planned educational excursions and enrichment opportunities, students connect their classroom learning to the real world in powerful ways.

Throughout the year, students participate in educational trips to local libraries, museums, cultural institutions, and community learning spaces that directly support and enhance current classroom themes and lesson plans. These experiences strengthen comprehension, critical thinking, and social development while exposing students to new environments and ideas.

In addition to field experiences, Woodlyn Academy offers a wide range of ongoing extracurricular programs designed to support the whole child. Our students engage in chess instruction, which has been a long-standing part of our School Age program, helping to build strategic thinking, patience, and problem-solving skills. We also provide enrichment in gymnastics, dance, computer literacy, and technology, promoting physical coordination, creative expression, and essential 21st-century skills.

By integrating excursions and enrichment into our academic program, Woodlyn Academy ensures that learning remains dynamic, engaging, and deeply connected to the world beyond the classroom.

Technology

At Woodlyn Academy, technology is thoughtfully integrated into the learning experience to support instruction, enhance engagement, and prepare students for an increasingly digital world. Our approach emphasizes responsible, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate use of technology as a tool for learning, creativity, and communication.

We provide students with access to a fully equipped computer lab and iPads in every classroom, ensuring that technology is both accessible and meaningfully incorporated across all age groups and subject areas. As the world continues to evolve toward advanced technology and artificial intelligence, we recognize the importance of introducing these tools early while teaching students how to use them responsibly and effectively.

Through guided activities, interactive learning tools, and age-appropriate digital resources, children develop strong computer literacy skills, strengthen problem-solving abilities, and build confidence using technology as part of their everyday learning environment. Students also engage in digital projects that support research, creativity, multimedia learning, and early coding concepts that reinforce classroom instruction.

By combining strong academic instruction with modern technology resources, Woodlyn Academy equips students with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
